Re-gifting: Taboo, Tight-wad or Totally Fine?

I was listening to the radio today and the topic of re-gifting came up. Is it cool or uncool? Well, blog-buddies, what do you think?

As a faithful Seinfeld follower, I remember the episode in which Jerry got a labelmaker that Elaine had given to Whatley. He was immediately named a 'regifter.' We have used the word ever since. Love those Seinfeld terms!

One of my fave sites is Wikipedia. Here is their definition:

Regifting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regifting is the act of taking a gift that has been received and giving it to somebody else, sometimes in the guise of a new gift. One example of a formalization of this activity are the white elephant gift exchanges, in which items can be regifted from year to year.
The term originated on an episode of Seinfeld (The Label Maker). In the episode, the character Elaine Benes calls Tim Whatley a "regifter" after he gives Jerry Seinfeld a label-maker that was originally given to Whatley by Elaine, although the practice pre-dates the term substantially
.

Can you believe that they actually cited the origination as being from the Seinfeld episode!?! I always thought so, but I am a little Seinfeld-obsessed and figured that it was just me!

So back to the issue. Is it okay, taboo, or somewhere in between?

I have to say that I have re-gifted a few times, and have felt weird about it each time. My advice: if you are going to re-gift you have to have the courage to stand behind it and feel good about it.
If I received a regift, I don't think that I would mind. We have a lot of gift-swapping going on and it can be a bit taxing on the old pocketbook. Some of us have really neat things on our shelves that need to find homes-- and I might actually like to give them a home! Can I come and look in your closets?
I am waffling, can you tell? Either way, don't give junk. If you hated it, don't pass it on. If it is junk in the store, don't spend your $$ on it and give it as a gift. Feel good about a regift and fess up if it makes you feel better. ie: "I got this great thing from my mom, but it doesn't match my kitchen at all. I thought that it would look so great in your house!" I heard once on Oprah that it's okay to regift if you tell the person and if it is a nice item. That is my feeling on it.

My Research:

If you decide that you are going to regift, there are a few precautions that you must take. {taken from regiftable.com}

Is the gift regiftable? Never regift handmade or one-of-a-kind items. Signed books and monogrammed items are off-limits. Do you have to be told not to regift free promotional items? Some gifts that are good candidates for regifting include good (unopened!) bottles of wine, new household items and inexpensive jewelry.

How is the condition? Only new, unopened gifts in good condition should be considered for regifting. Never give partially used gift cards. Don’t give items that you have owned for a long time. A general rule of thumb: if you have to dust it off, it is not regiftable.

Is this going to work? Successful regifters use common sense. If you are going to regift, be sure you know who gave you the item, so you don’t return something to the original giver. Only regift items to people who are not likely to see the original giver.

Do you have good intentions? Don’t just give a gift to give a gift. Be sure that the recipient will appreciate the item. Remember, if you feel that an item is undesirable, the recipient probably will too. If you are regifting simply because you ran out of time, gift cards are simple to obtain and always well received.

How does it look? When it comes to gift-giving, go for show! While gift bags in good condition can be reused, wrapping paper is a one-time thing. Always spring for a new card or gift tag.

Can you handle it? If you don’t plan to announce the gift as a regift, ask yourself if you can keep the secret. Never feel guilty about regifting once you’ve done it.

Strange things do happen, though. Even the mighty Tim Gunn has made an etiquette slip. Do tell.

Tim Gunn on regifting:

"A situation that still makes me cringe: A colleague at Parsons was leaving to accept a position at another institution in another city. I had forgotten about her farewell party. I scrambled though the stuff in my office searching for an unopened box, the contents of which would be appropriate to re-gift it. (Why I have lots of unopened gifts is another story…) VoilĂ ! I found a sterling silver Tiffany pen that had been presented to me after judging a city-wide design competition. I relished her gush at the sight of the signature blue box and white ribbon. She opened it, and looked at me tearfully and said, 'You even had it engraved.' Oh, no. 'Best wishes from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.' Re-gifting can be very dangerous, indeed."

OUCH!

Pink Milk

I have this little sister Lola. She is small and very funny.

Do we have any 'Charlie and Lola' fans out there? Hello, this is the best kids show EVER.

This terribly cute show tantalizes you with fun music, cute stories and lovable characters with those adorable British accents!

Lola loves pink milk. Consequently, Lilly loves pink milk. Lilly will do anything for pink milk. Pink milk is power for me.

Meet MY pink milk. Yumm-o! (said like Rachael Ray). Holy Cow this stuff is delish! If you haven't tried it, you really need to.

If I were in a Scooby Doo Movie, the bad guy could get me to get out of the Mystery Machine by waving this over my head!

Yeah, it's that good.

One Stitch, Two Stitch, Red Stitch, Blue Stitch

After 5 long days of, "don't touch it, stop pulling it, leave it alone, I know that you don't want cream on it, leave your bandaid on!... please" Nicky finally got his stitches out!

As you can see by the photo, he got quite a bit of bruising about 2 days later. He looks really beat up and everyone always does a double-take and looks me over really well! It's so uncomfortable.

The removal was not uneventful (of course) and he had to be restrained and laid on while they removed the stitches. It is healed well, but started to bleed again, so I asked them to glue it with the Dermabond. I just knew that he would pick at it, so more restraining and screaming followed. UGH.
However, the volunteer felt so sorry for him that he managed to score a super tractor!

Me and the other man in my life.

Our deal was that after we got his stitches out that we would go to get a treat at the cafeteria and then ride the elevator! Nicky got chocolate milk, a donut and Froot Loops! What did I get? It doesn't matter... I am sure that it was healthly. ;-)

Safety Bear!

Imagine our delight to find Safety Bear and his policeman friend doing a song and dance number in the atrium!

Nicky got to meet Safety Bear, and yes, I got credit for hooking him up!
Gotta love it.

Pass the Milkshake, Fonzie

You Belong in 1955

You're fun loving, romantic, and more than a little innocent. See you at the drive in!

Why is the word 'innocent' so darned embarrassing?!? But, you know, I LOVE milkshakes, and if there were a drive-in nearby, I'd most definitely be there!

Stitches for the Little Man

Tempests and Tragedies!

Friday evening Nicky was playing with his big sisters, and despite precautionary pillows placed around the room, Nicky was able to smash his nose right into the window sill! Please see exhibit 1 for frontal view.

Exhibit 1.

The stitching was a basic nightmare. He got three of them. The poor little guy was hurting so bad, but he was very brave and super sweet. He would scream and scream during the most hurtful times, and when the wound technician would dab something on that felt good (I guess a topical numbing agent??) Nicky would say, "That makes me happy" to him. Melted our hearts!

Exhibit 2 is found below. It is the closeup of the tear in his nostril.

Exhibit 2.

Our little Nicky also had to have x-rays which resulted in another traumatic scream-fest. Thankfully though, he has no obvious breaks.

I thought that it was uncanny that I was journalling Lilly's illness and about 8 hours later I found myself back in the same ER. It was upsetting, but I knew that it was just a procedure and that he would be fine. For this, I am supremely thankful.

The sunny side is that Nicky didn't hit his eyes or teeth. It could have been much worse.

Glimmers of Thanks

I am thankful that our little Lilly is here with us today, in full health and function, delighting us each and every day with her Sweet Spirit and Lovely Disposition.

On March 14th, our lives were starting to change, and we didn't know it.

{The following is an excerpt from my journal}

On about March 8th Lilly had an ear infection. She was given the antibiotic Augmentin and took it for about 7 days when she began vomiting. Her pediatrician said that we should discontinue the antibiotics since she had most of the RX. (later we found that at this point she had a stomach virus- nothing to do with the antibiotic)

Lilly vomited about 6 - 8 times that day. She had no fever and no other symptoms, she had been a bit puny for a few days and really had no appetite, which we chalked up to the antibiotic which is known to be rough on the tummy -- the reason why we discontinued it --.

We snuggled on the couch and watched a marathon America's Next Top Model together. She was pretty lethargic, but had stopped vomiting and so when she asked to go to bed, I tucked her in.

{end of journal entry}

We had planned a camping trip to Tyler, Texas which was postponed a few times due to lots of rain. Because Lilly had been a but puny, it seemed just as well. The weather cleared enough that we were going to go on the 14th, but Lilly was still not quite 100%. My family went on the camping trip on this day, and Lilly and I were going to meet them the next day if Lilly felt better. We had every confidence that she would.

I got this picture from the camping crew that evening. They were enjoying themselves and looked forward to our joining them in morning.

The thing that you need to know about Lilly is that she LOVES camping. She had been asking to go camping for months, really. When everyone left earlier in the day, we didn't tell her where they were going, and she really was not feeling well enough to ask. I was going to surprise her when we drove up in the morning.

{back to journal entry}

About 30 minutes after I tucked Lilly into bed I heard the most horrible thud! and found her lying on her stomach on her bedroom floor- crying. I thought that she just tripped as she ran out of her room with nausea.

I brought her downstairs and kept her on the couch with me and we dozed for a few hours. She would frequently wake and ask for a drink of apple juice. I noticed that her hands were very shaky as she brought the cup to her mouth. I also noticed that her legs were shaky when I helped her to the bathroom. She couldn't walk on her own, and while assisted, she looked a lot like she had Parkinson's Disease. I started to get nervous then. I thought that she was really weak from dehydration.

At about 3:00 am I called the Nurse Advice Line at her Pediatrician's office. Twenty minutes later when the nurse called back (about the longest 20 minutes of my life) she said that if Lilly couldn't stand on her own that we needed to go the the Emergency Room.

As I prayed, I knew that it was the right thing to do, and I wasn't really scared or upset at the thought of it. I know that this is where the Spirit comforted me, because I am always just one small event away from panic.

I called John's mom to come with me, since she lives about a mile from us. I was in a time warp. It took me about 20 minutes to get out of the door! I was a bit befuddled trying to decide what I needed to take with me.

I left a message on Johnny's cell phone. I told him that by the time he got the message, we would probably be at home and that Lilly was probably dehydrated. His phone was dead and being charged in the van. (Maddy and Stephie had their phones in the tent-- I am not sure why I didn't call them???)

When we got to the ER, they gave us Gatorade to start the rehydration process-- that was their best-guess right out of the gate, too. We sat in the waiting room for about an hour giving her about 1 oz. at a time. She was very lethargic and glazed-looking, and she was not talking. I could tell that she was listening, but I didn't know if she could understand. She had such a pleasant look on her face. She was being so sweet, but I couldn't get her to respond.

{end of journal entry}

More of the story in next blogs.

Things I am thankful for in this situation:

The Power of Prayer and Personal Revelation - This was a strengthening experience for me. I had to pray on my own, without the strength and goodness of my sweet husband. The Lord responded immediately my giving me the Spirit to comfort me and the strength to go through this situation as the only parent.

Inspiration from the Lord - I am thankful that John and I were both inspired that Lilly should not go up with the rest of the family that day. She had been perking up, so we thought, but it was very apparent that she shouldn't go. I shudder to think of what might have happened being out in the boonies when she started this illness.

Pictures - During this illness which lasted the best part of a month, I kept on looking back at the picture below.

This was the last picture taken of her before her illness. I kept wondering if it would be the last picture of her as normal. (more posts will let you know what all was happening to her during this time)
I am so grateful to have pictures. They are so powerful and wonderful.

I have SO MUCH to be thankful for. And truly, I am.

Random Thankfulness

I am thankful for the great image above. How true it is! Do any of you know an idle mother? Is it physically possible?

In the spirit of yesterday's post, I am going to dedicate this month's posts to thankfulness. There is just so much in my life to be thankful for, especially this year.

I am going to do a series of posts on the devastating illness and recovery of my daughter Lilly. Many people have asked for details, and I need to journal them.

I am really grateful for this blogging world. I am new to it, and I have enjoyed so much the camaraderie found here. I love to hear about what other moms are doing and how they 'find joy in womanhood.' Being a girl is awesome, being a mom of girls is an awesome responsibility! You all inspire me to be better and to do better. I am thankful for a forum that fosters friendship. I am a bit of a hermit at times, just my nature, and this helps me to feel connected to great women even when I am puttering around my home doing projects, changing diapers and cleaning the house.

Here's to us, girls!

Who Stole Thanksgiving??

For many years I have seen Christmas decorations popping up in stores in August. There they would be, decking it out at the back of the store, and if you had a hankering for holly you could wander back there and get a jump on your holiday decor list.

Has anyone noticed that things have changed in the past couple of years?

I drove out of my neighborhood the morning after Hallowe'en and there were wreaths and garlands on the main entryways to the entire neighborhood! November 1st! That's 55 days before Christmas! Last year I remember that the garland looked haggard and the lights were hanging off of the trees by Christmastime. Not exactly a pretty picture.

Now, you may think that I am being Bah-Humbug!, but you would be wrong. I LOVE CHRISTMAS! It is my favorite holiday. I look forward to it each and every year. I just feel that if we rush into it and Christmas ourselves to death for 2 months, that it cheapens it.

The other thing that bothers me is that Thanksgiving has been hijacked!

In Canada, Thanksgiving is in October. It is in no way related to Christmas. But, when I was in college in Idaho (Go Ricks!) I went home for Thanksgiving with my friends. I had a totally amazing experience. We turkeyed ourselves into oblivion (I discovered sweet potatoes with marshmallows-- YUM!! --but I digress). We had that old-fashioned Thanksgiving that I always used to see on the coffee commercials. Then, the most marvellous thing happened...

The next morning, the Chrismas Season was officially opened with Christmas Decorating, Christmas Shopping, and Christmas Music. It was Glorious. I fell in love. Ever since then, I have loved having the Opening of the Christmas Season linked to the Thankfulness of Thanksgiving.

Here's to Thanksgiving!

Ghosts and Goblins

Here is a peek into our Halloween this year.

Stephie was a Rock Star! Maddy did her makeup and hair (daddy sprayed it.) She definitely rocked it out and had a blast! She got many, many compliments on her eye makeup which doesn't show well in this picture. She is a knock-out!

Lilly was Princess Genevieve from Barbie's Twelve Dancing Princesses movie. She really loved getting make upped by Maddy!

Nicky was the world's cutest Superman! Sorry if you had a little Superman this year, too-- but, there it is! This picture is his "flying" manoeuvre. He runs around the house saying "Suba-man to a wescooo!!" Translation, 'Superman to the rescue.'

You will notice the missing Maddy. She did every one's makeup and then went off to a Halloween Party at her friend's house. 'my baby is growing up' sniff, sniff.

Here is the gang this year.

Blaise was a Disco Diva, Laci was a Tiger Cat, Briggs was his usual camo-clad soldier (compliments of Uncle Chris) and Whitt was a costume boycott this year!

We didn't do a large family pumpkin this year. We each did our own little pumpkin.

This picture shows the cheesecloth ghosts also. Left is Lilly's, right is Nicky's and the middle is Mom and Dad's.

These are Maddy and Stephie's ghosts.

They are so super-fun to make and a favorite family tradition.

We often find one or two funny items in the candy bucket. This year's was a candy cane. Stephie said that an old lady gave it to her.

Did you have a funny find?
