Mother-Daughter Evening

The Activity Day girls at church had a Mother-Daughter evening. It was really sweet--Lilly gave me a sheet of paper that she had answered about me. It was really cute.
Then she chose me the flower below.
Lilly and Mommy

All of the girls sang to us. Below is a video clip.
Yes, I needed tissues.

But, how?

How do you let your children grow up and leave?  How is it okay that they want to move on and start their own life?  {even though we will be paying a healthy premium for that independence?)

When we brought Maddy home from the hospital, John and I were slightly stunned, and frankly surprised, that they let us just take her home.  They ensure that you have a car seat and a pediatrician, but other than that, you are on your own, Bucky.

It was the same with all of those milestones along the way:  Nursing, transitioning foods, sleep-training, crawling, walking, going to Kindergarten, learning to ride a bike, teaching about the Birds and the Bees. You just have to figure it out.  You are in this boat and whether it sinks or floats is all up to you.
With the help of:
Prayer, parenting books, and LOTS of chocolate.

And now we face the dreaded exciting Graduation Day. Graduation from high school, graduation from Seminary, graduation from living at home full-time...
Again I ask:  But, how do you let them leave?  How do you just stand by when they happily make their plans to fly the coop?   pick their classes? dorm room? meal plan?  How do you let them pack their bags? Is is too dramatic to say that it feels like my heart is being ripped out by that guy in the Indiana Jones movie?

I guess you just do it.

You do it because you want them to be happy and you are glad that they got good grades, are confident,  can make decisions, and have a plan for their life.

You do it because what is the alternative?
Unemployed?  in Greenland??  {sorry, Princess Bride keeps coming to mind...}
But really.
I would be very disappointed if Maddy didn't have the confidence and smarts to go on to college and pursue her dreams.
I would be sad if she were sad to leave me {sniff, sniff} behind and was afraid to take the jump into her own life.

So, what is this post about?
Whining, mostly.
and being a proud Momma.
But mostly whining. {sigh}

Snow Day--part 1

I am very late in posting about our extraordinary Texas snowfall. It was a blast. School's were closed, roads were closed, and we had fun, fun, FUN!

When kids grow up in Texas, snow is an extremely rare occurrence. Random flakes sprinkle the grass and kids run outside making 10-inch snowmen.

This year, however, was quite a bit different. A snowfall worthy of snow angels, snowmen and sledding!

Here is Nicky amazed at the snowflakes.

Lilly, too!

Getting into the fun!

What do we do! Run and yell. ;-)

A happy, happy Snow Day.

This Month's Happiness

My blogging absence does not mean that I was abducted by aliens, that I have suddenly become an exercise-fiend and spend all of my time at the gym, or that my house is completely decluttered. Alas, it means that life has been a blur since about March and my thoughts come in crazy clumps that nobody really wants to try to decipher.

That being said, I am thrilled about lots of things that have gone on around here lately, and I hope to be back in the Blog Saddle soon.

Here is my list of things that have recently made me smile:

Hubby probably won't have to go back to China! WooHoo!! Three trips in 6 months is a lot. And I am a baby.

No more running to the schools constantly!

And last but not least, swimming pool, here I come! With sunscreen, of course.

So Thankful!

I am so thankful that this sweet sugar, my sweetie pie niece Blaise, is okay!
She and her mom, my SIL and best buddy Laura, were in a terrible car accident last week. They were in an accident in a sleepy neighborhood just outside of the school. A chic was speeding, was on a cell phone and ran a stop sign. They were hit at the back passenger wheel and their vehicle tipped on its side, spun and slid and then righted itself again.
I am thankful for seatbelts otherwise Blaise would have been a tossed around the car and possibly would not have survived. Good job on wearing your seatbelt, Miss Blaise!
As it is, she had a huge bump on her forehead and had to get 15 stitches behind her ear.

Laura is also okay, thankfully. She suffered some deep bruising and soreness along one side of her body.

I have been much more diligent about cell phone use in the car lately. I think that we each need to revisit this. What tragedies could happen in a split-second?

But mostly, I am so thankful.

A Day in My Life...

I like to think that my blog is my journal. It is. I blow my own horn- both for myself and for my family. I write down silly quotes that are heard around our house. It is a great place to put some some favorite recipes and display pictures. I love it.

The only thing is...

It's not really like a journal at all, in that others read and comment. (yeah! keep commenting, I love it) So, with that comes a desperate desire to seem interesting. But sometimes things are just not. You know?

Like today.

Wake up.

Take kids to Seminary.

Sleep in car-- I like to read, but couldn't do it today

Come home.

Take big kids to school.

Come home.

Feed little kids. Work on Kindergarten project. Get kids dressed.

Take a shower.

Pick up carpool. Take Kindergartener to school.

Come home.

Check weather, blogs, write lists, change laundry loads and load dishwasher.

Make an appointment.

Pick up Kindergartener from an extra-short 2-hour day~

Come home.

Feed little kids.

It is now 1:17 pm.

See what I mean? Interesting? No.

But I love my life.

I am glad that I can stay home with my kids. Glad for all of the uninteresting moments that make my life mine.

Right now in the background I hear:

Kids squealing, a bike being ridden with great joy through the house and the dog growling to get back her beloved toy.

Nicky spins around wearing his Hot Wheels helmet; Lilly's pigtails are flying.

Life is Good.
